Lesson Plan:
PLAN YOUR TRIP
(40 minutes)

Objective:
Students will identify three to five jobs to “test drive” that match their personal style profiles or which are interesting to them, and to know what level of higher education is required for each job.

Resources:
Internet access for each student

Approach:

  1. Have students log on to the site and go to the Plan Your Trip section. Have them read through the instructions page (the Important: Please Read section). Ask for questions.
  2. Students will see a list of potential careers that match their own personal style profiles. Have each student review the careers listed and select five careers to investigate further during the Jump In and Drive session later. These careers will be added to the Destination list on the navigation screen.
  3. Note that for each job, a Graduation Cap icon is featured next to the job, showing how much education is required for that job.
  4. Direct the students to additional jobs they might like to consider which are not listed, via the Advanced Search capability.

Assignment:
To ensure that students are searching their list thoroughly, you can assign certain criteria to the jobs students choose to test drive. For instance, you might consider a writing assignment like the following:

  • Find 5 jobs on your list that require at least a four-year college degree.
  • Find 2 jobs on your list that require graduate school (or alternatively, depending on class composition) at least a two-year degree.
  • Use the Advanced Search function to find one job not on your list that you would like to learn more about.

For Further Discussion:

  1. Have the students think creatively about the relationships between the jobs on their list. Brainstorm potential “clusters” of jobs (e.g., health care, technical, etc.) Discuss common characteristics among some of their listed jobs, and what skills might be required that could be used in many different settings.
